Dessication

I sprayed this section with that herbicide.

This is day 4 after application.

Nothing seemed to happen. There was slight yellowing, but nothing significant. I was thinking I'd have to spray again, when the husband announced he was going to "whack some weeds."

Fine, I said.

And this is what he did:

So, now, I have to wait until it all grows back up again and start over. (Though I did spray what was left and it has yellowed somewhat.)

Good thing I'm not in any great rush.

(However, I am a bit confused about what exactly one is supposed to do after everything turns yellow--just yank it out?)

Can you get him to whack the rest of them too? Herbicides work better on cut surfaces so if you haven't yet, spray the stuff he already cut. I'd try and herbicide it and then get him to whack the regrowth in a couple of days and herbicide that again. You shouldn't have to pull stuff, it should die off and dry out and then you can just rake it up.

Anne, that's what he said!
Everything I'd read, though, led me to believe that it needs to be "actively growing" so the stuff can get into the plant via the leaves.

I'm really confused.

I am confused too- the plants usually take the toxins up via either their leaves or roots- then they should just dry up and die. Maybe the plantings were to dense and they didn't get enough toxin?

I don't think I sprayed the area heavily enough, the first time. I have sprayed the scrub you can see in the picture: the plants still standing are protecting a rose still in there. We'll have to see if something happens.

The plants should absorb very easily via the cut surfaces. When it says "actively growing" I think it means as opposed to being dormant in the wintertime or something. I wouldn't wait for it all to grow back, I would hit it when it is weakened for a better shot at killing it.

Good idea, Anne, I will! Ultimately, I don't care if he's right, or I'm right, I just want to go away and never come back again.

I hope you mean you just want the weeds to go away and never come back again!
