Gulp: I made the call
An arbourist should be out in a few days to look at our "sick" tree and see if we can save it.

what kind of tree is it- and how did it get that giant wound at it's base? Do you think it's infected, infested- or did it get hit by lightning?
We're really not sure how it got that: it looked like something just "broke off."
We aren't sure what's wrong with it: just lots of dead branches and it has stopped flowering. I'll let you know.
