Day 9.4(b) Electrical Update.

The electrician came.
After checking the breaker panel, it turned out it wasn't a fuse, but a short somewhere in the line. So I ran around unplugging things while he tut tutted the state of our wiring. The schematic I drew turned out to mildly useful. He started checking all the switches and outlets, starting at those closest to the breaker....and just as he was about to start taking apart the overhead lights, he asked me: "Is the garage connected to the house?"

Oh, yeah. I never go in there so I'd forgotten. But there had been high winds on Saturday and that was when the power had gone out.

So I took him outside and showed him the two thin yellow lines running suspended across the backyard.
"See those? They go to the garage."
More tut tutting.
He uncrossed them.

That was all.

The power is back.

Oh good grief. I hate when it turns out to be something like that. You feel like shrinking into a little ball and rolling away.

But I'm really glad you got your power back!!!!!

You have power! Yay!

There's an occasion in my past when we had an electrician out over what really was a blown fuse, so comfort yourself that you're doing pretty good by comparison.

The upshot, of course, is that we may have found someone we can work with for the re-wiring. Not until Spring, though at least.

Yay! Old wiring is scary, so good thing for deciding to tackle it. And very good thing for not wandering around in the dark for several more days.

Anecdote: When I was 13-ish we lived for several years in a house (not in North America) wired for, I think it was 1500W (nowadays there are toasters that use more power than that). If you want to talk about being friendly with the circuit breaker...
