Not a Lot of Fuss

The front hallway has this old niche for the telephone. I like to decorate it seasonally--usually with a plate. Christmas cards hang from a mini- clothesline I got from the dollar store years ago.

I didn't want to decorate this year.

Some paperwhites by the living room windows--a first for us this year.

The living room "mantlescape."

Probably because I have been decorating since the beginning of October. The living room and kitchen look fabulous, though, don't they? I could not be happier. But have you noticed? Neither room really wants red.

The shelves in the kitchen get a silver charger and a snowflake plate, both in silver-grey.

Still loving white flowers. The green sparkly placemats on the table are another nod to Christmas in the kitchen.

And my son loves red. "It's not Christmas without red and green decorations," he told me.

Oddly enough, I did add some red to my bedroom.

The little bear belonged to my daughter when she was three. She decided to get rid of her stuffed animals recently and I rescued this one.

But, as for the rest of the house, my husband hauled out the tree and a few boxes of things and I told the family to have at it. Other than stringing the lights thru the tree, putting up the creche and putting out a few things, they really didn't do much.

The tree. I put on the old green, red and gold ribbon chain we made years ago--and then just a few balls. Nothing else--oh except some fake pine smelling sticks which are so awful I removed after about an hour. Actually, I only found about half of them so that corner stinks like a car wash.

That was fine by me. I arranged a few things, put some balls on the tree, and called it done.

A few pretties on the table in the dining room.

This is not "artful, minimal" no-fuss Christmas decor. This is just a few things from the boxes under the stairs. The things that seem to matter to us. The things that say Christmas, I guess.

Over the TV.

How is Christmas coming along at your place?

Your simple decorations are lovely. A lot of times simple is better, especially in this hectic world that we live in. So much commercialism that we forget the real reason of this holiday, we forget peace and calm, in search of that perfect Christmas. (There is no such thing on this earth at this time.)

I was going to put up a larger tree, but decided to go with a small one instead and a tiny one in the bedroom, plus the nativity and heavenly host are in the living room. A couple other small things, but that was it, and I am enjoying the less look instead of more, more and more.

It's hard to believe Christmas is just 8 days away. This year has zipped by.

May love, peace and joy fill your hearts and newly decorated home this holiday season. Sit back and relax with your lovely family.

Both rooms do look fabulous :) and I'm with you on the "not a lot of fuss" Christmas decorating. I just put up a long-winded post about it on my own site. One of my myriad reasons for minimalist decorating is because all the red/green whatevers just make my house look and feel *not* like my house anymore, something I find disquieting (although I do make a bit of an effort for the sake of the kids - my youngest, like your son, has definite ideas about what is needed at Christmastime!). So far, all we have up is the decorate-the-tree Advent calendar, and I have a pot of greens at the front door. The tree will come this weekend, once our daughter is home from university. And I need to clean the house before I drag things up from the basement, otherwise I'll feel even more anxious about things being out of place...

@Lorraine, Thanks for your encouragement. I am glad you put out just what you felt was important. That's important!

@Marian. Oh good for you! That is quite minimal! I hear you on the cleaning!

I was thinking that the red stockings add a nice burst of color to your room--and wishing that our stockings did the same. But, like you, I feel like the decorations in other colors just make the living room feel jarring somehow.

I tend to decorate like you--just a few things. Partly because too much makes the space feel cluttered (which makes me feel cranky) and partly because I just don't have time to do the whole big shebang I used to do. On our mantel I just put candles and pine boughs/cones from a tree in our backyard. It's the simplest it's ever been, and it's the best it's ever been. Candles (light) and greenery are what this is mostly about for me now.

I hope you and your family enjoy some down time together in your lovely home.

@Rita--that sounds absolutely lovely. I hope your family has a chance to slow down and be together too.

I love your "less is more" Christmas decor. I have never gone all out for holiday decorating. We have a big tree, so that covers it for me....and now my son has a pretty big nutcracker collection. I can't hang stockings because of the cats though.... I'm one of those people who want Christmas decor gone on the afternoon of Christmas, my Mr. wants it up until mid Feb. We compromise and get it gone new years day.

I love that bird plate in that nook. Is it vintage? If not, where did you get it?
