This is why:
It's an IKEA MALM from a way way back.
Pretty drab.
I'm not sure what to do exactly--go all colourful and bright? Or should I make a quieter statement--so I don't upstage my gorgeous blue doors?

I have been admiring colourful dressers for years.
Here's one in coral:

Jenny Komenda is such a master of colour.
I love green, too.

No doubt about it, a brightly painted piece can make a huge impact in a room.
Lately, I've been more and more drawn to wood. Wood makes a statement too, albeit, a quieter one. Ahem, except for maybe this next piece.
Absolutely gorgeous. This also belonged to Jenny Komenda. I would put this into my hallway in a heartbeat.
This next isn't quite the diva. I like its playfulness:
And this two tone look.
I am absolutely bowled over by that lamp
The reverse effect is stunning, too:
Perhaps this is the humblest of the bunch. Still. Just lovely.

Do you have a preference? Diva-like or quiet? Painted or wood? How do you like your dressers?
If you have navy paint left over, go navy and spray paint your knobs the gold color. The doors are awesome. The gold knobs are too! Very classy!

Aren't the doorknobs great? They are just what we already had. I just cleaned them up. :)
ReplyDeletePainting the dresser navy hust might be the simplest solution of all. Hmmm. Thanks for the idea. I promise to mull it over.
Alana,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your hallway! The blue doors against white walls and trim is absolutely amazing!
Regarding the dresser, is there a color you love? Personally I would stick with white but wouldn't it be fun to have that beautiful coral in that spot? It would be so unexpected. You would smile each time you were in that little hallway. If you hated it you could always paint it blue. I say go for it! Also it wouldn't take much paint so the investment would be small.

MMarie--thanks! yes--all the work in painting the thing is the prep! (Sand and then prime--it'shard shiny glossy melamine--except where it isn't and then it is pressboard.)Coral first,eh? I wonder--just how much colour can I live with?
ReplyDeleteOkay here's a new thought. Keep the dresser white for now and add color to the top with a runner and whatever other supplies you need to kept there...maybe a small mason jar or aluminum can (for pencils and pens) with a piece of pretty paper wrapped around it for color? Fast, easy, inexpensive. You could also add fun knobs to the drawer fronts, if possible, depending on the type of material the drawer fronts are made of. Ohhh the possibilities!
ReplyDeleteTwo quick thoughts:
ReplyDelete1. It may just be that the pictures are misleading, but it looks like the hall area is smallish and doesn't get a lot of light? I'd be worried that a darker or more saturated colour like the navy or the coral might make the space seem closed off or "busy". If I were to paint the dresser a solid colour, I'd go with a super lightened version of the existing navy and pop some gold knobs on there.
2. I LOVE the combo of white and natural wood in your reference photos! Putting wood or wood texturing in the existing dresser seems like it would be waaaay more trouble than it's worth, but you could get the same contrast by, say, leaving the frame white, painting the drawer fronts gold or brass and going with white or blue knobs.
I think the white/gold is what I'd go with if it were my space, but you know I'm a sucker for metallics. :p
The doors look great, by the way!
Thanks, Anastasia. You are reading the space correctly--it is very small. White plus gold? That is bold and shiny!
ReplyDeleteHey, could you make a wood top for the dresser? That would give you a pop of wood in the white (still loving that white) and allow some of the outdoor element into the area? I know the floor is wood, but that would bring it up closer to eye level. Then leave the rest of the dresser white maybe? Add some gold to bling it out.
ReplyDeleteThinking out loud! LOL

Love your thoughts Gina! The best of all worlds, perhaps?
