Frugal Home Projects

I've never had a lot of money available to decorate. DIY is a choice for some: a necessity for others, like us.

In February of 2012, my husband and I decided to pay off our debt as quickly as possible. I decided that any home decorating projects would have to come out of my own "blow" money--and items we already had on hand.

It's been an extraordinary challenge.

I'm sharing a few of the things I've made not because they're better than anyone else's...not even close...I'm humbled every time I search the web for inspiration...but because I hope they may spark your own creativity.

caveat: I don't provide blow by blow tutorials--just the steps along the way. It's a bit more in the inspirational vein than a detailed Martha Stewart how-to.

Bathroom curtains using a drop cloth, tea towels and ribbon.

A drying rack using wood, shelf brackets and inexpensive 24" towel racks:

Why put cleaning supplies on a shelf when you can hang them up?A towel rack gets repurposed, again.

Creating a better broom closet with "S" hooks, string and a towel rack. (I seem to like towel racks a lot, don't I?)

Can you take one more? Use it as a pot lid holder!

I used a free pattern found on-line, my printer to size it just right, a file folder and X-acto knife to create my own stencil for the kitchen soffitt.

This was actually my first attempt. I had to scale up the pattern considerably in order to save my hand from turning into a permanent claw.

Flip Flop holders from magazine holders. This one was inspired by pinterest and was dead easy.

How about an earring holder from leftover black plastic screening, cardstock and an old photo frame?

You could simply use a bulletin board, but here I turned some old cork tiles and a picture frame into a necklace holder.

There are limitless ways to repurpose things and put them to good use. I hope I sparked a few ideas for you.
